چکیده

Ultrasound provides a rapid method of evaluating the emergency patient at the bedside by the treating physician. Besides being advantageous in eliminating or supporting a differential diagnosis in an emergency patient, bedside ultrasound can also rapidly evaluate physiology. This articles describes such a use of bedside ultrasound, the evaluation of the inferior vena cava size and collapsibility in the evaluation of shock states. The ultrasound procedure is described as well as how to integrate the information gained from this test into clinical practice.

Internal Jugular Vein Height and Inferior Vena Cava Diameter Measurement using Ultrasound to Determine Central Venous Pressure: A Correlation Study.

OBJECTIVE To determine the correlation between central venous pressure (CVP) measured by conventional central venous access and ultrasonographic measurement of internal jugular vein (IJV) height and inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter. METHODS A prospective, cross-sectional, convenience sampling observational study. RESULTS 25 patients from the Emergency Department (ED) Universiti Kebangsaan ...

Semi-automated tracking and continuous diameter monitoring of inferior vena cava in simulated and experimental ultrasound imaging

Assessment of respirophasic diameter fluctuations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is detrimentally affected by its concomitant displacements. This study aims at presenting and validating a method to compensate for IVC movement artifacts while continuously measuring its diameter in an automated fashion (with minimal interaction with the user) from a longitudinal B-mode ultrasound (US) clip. Perf...

Ultrasonographic assessment of inferior vena cava/abdominal aorta diameter index: a new approach of assessing hypovolemic shock class 1.

BACKGROUND We designed this study to expand the usage of ultrasound to detect early occurrence of hypovolemia. We explore the potential use of inferior vena cava (IVC) and abdominal aorta (AA) diameter index (IVC:AA) measured ultrasonographically to detect class 1 hypovolemic shock with blood loss less than 15%.ᅟ METHODS The aim of this study was to determine the changes in the diameter of in...

A comparison of the ultrasound measurement of the inferior vena cava obtained with cardiac and convex transducers

Background Ultrasound measurement of the inferior vena cava diameter and its respiratory variability are amongst the predictors of fluid volume status. The primary purpose of the present study was to compare the consistency of inferior vena cava diameter measurements and the collapsibility index, obtained with convex and cardiac transducers. A secondary aim was to assess the agreement of the pa...

The efficacy of inferior vena cava diameters and the jugular vein in assessing fluid resuscitation

Objective: Fluid resuscitation is necessary in almost all critical patients. The central venous pressure (CVP) is a well-established method of assessing resuscitation. Recently, there have been attempts to investigate less invasive methods like the diameters of inferior vena cava (IVC) or the jugular vein. We aimed to investigate this method in our research. Methods: Seventy eight critical...
